Sundsvall the home of Swedish aluminium

Kubal is one of MidSweden´s largest engineering industries, providing important employment in the region, and also Sweden´s sole producer of primary aluminium.

About 50 per cent of the aluminium produced in Sundsvall is delivered to customers in Sweden and 50 per cent to European customers. The aluminium is further processed to produce a multiplicity of different products - from aluminium foil and all types of packaging to building materials and components for vehicles.

The company was founded 60 years ago, in 1942, when an alumina factory was opened in Sundsvall and a smaller smelter was started. Since then, the Sundsvall plant has developed both the quality and quantity of its output. The original smelter has been progressively expanded over the years, and a new one was built in the 1960s. The No. 1 smelter was rebuilt, incorporating the latest technology, in the middle of the 1980s.

Today, Kubal is an efficient, quality-conscious smelter. The company has held ISO-9001 quality certification since 1994.

Capacity has grown from the original 2000 tonnes/year to the present 100 000 tonnes/year. This corresponds to half of the total raw metal requirements in Sweden.
Kubal is at present in a development phase where a lot of energy is being put in to an organisation relying on shared responsibility, delegated authorities and goal-orientation. Its a long-term development process aimed at making Kubal one of the world´s leading aluminium producers.
